Sep 2011: Lunchtime Live concerts in Bristol

July 28, 2011

Every other month, Saint Stephen’s church hosts a free concert (with retiring collection) each Wednesday lunchtime from 1 – 2pm.

Lunchtime Live concerts are coordinated by jazz musician, David Mowat. Musicians, please email: bigbromoATyahoo.co.uk

Our September 2011 programme is below and our next Lunchtime Live series is in November 2011

Wed 7 September – Jim Blomfield trio

Jim Blomfield piano, Roshan ‘Tosh’ Wijetunge bass, Mark Whitlam drums.
” …the best British pianist you’ve never heard of and an absolute marvel” Independent on Sunday.
Hear a sample of the jazz-meisters, the Jim Blomfield Trio.

Friday 9 September Friday Baroque and roll

Royal Court Players, Mike Wilshaw (bass and mandolin) and Fran Bhoola (continuo), who run this Baroque ensemble always bring new and popular programmes. Well-proportioned music which fits the perpendicular architecture of Saint Stephen’s to a tee.

Wed 14 Sep The poetry of Wilfred Owen

How will Wilfred Owen’s unforgettable poems resonate for us as Britain continues to pursue war in Afghanistan? Wilfred Owen’s war poetry is read by Auriol Britton, a prize-winning recitalist.

Wed 21 Sep New Orleans blues piano

As many recent appearances at the Old Duke show, Eric Bridgwater creates grooves steeped in the influences of Professor Longhair, James Booker and Dr John.

Note: We previously referred to Eric being one of the foremost interpreters of New Orleans piano “in the west” – this should have read “Knowle West”.

Jazz piano portrait with kind permission of the artist, Chuck Weber.

Wed 28 Sep: English and American art songs

Maita Robinson will include contemporary works by Samuel Barber, Michael Head, and Erroylln Wallen. Robinson discovered the joys of classical singing through international singing coach, Michael Harper. She has won several awards for her Lieder and song, and recently sang in the Asolo art song festival in Italy. Liz Cockitt will collaborate on the piano.

Hi,
I went to today’s Royal Court Players lunchtime concert (09/09/11) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe it was just a slow day, but I was surprised by the tiny audience. I have to say that I have been vaguely aware that you hold concerts, but I only got a grasp of what you were offering and that it was free when I looked at your website in advance of open doors day.
I was wondering if you have thought about putting an advert up and or leaflets in the classical sheet music and CD shop Providence Music (off Park St). Lots of like minded people would surely see it there. You could also leave leaflets at the Arnolfini, Watershed etc???
It would be nice to have further details of upcoming concerts on your website, for example you have the Royal Court Players and the Bristol Georgian Choir in November but these are not on your site. You have some interesting stuff and you should broadcast that to all those who don’t already know!

Hi Madeleine

Thank you so much for this response, and ideas to help spread the word.

Providence Music is a good place for leaflets – thanks for that.

Yes, the November concerts are happening – now posted!
