Lunchtime Live concerts

Every Wednesday a different guest offers a soul-lifting performance, their unique contribution from the eclectic Bristol music scene.

All concerts are free with a retiring collection.

Wednesday 30 November: The Pink Noise Recorder Quartet – Modern recorder music


The quartet return to Saint Stephen’s for a whirlwind tour of modern recorder music from Bruckner to Brubeck. If you still associate recorders with primary school, these guys will open your eyes to the melodic and funky potentials of grown-up recorder playing. The quartet, all experienced musicians, have been playing together since the 1990s.

Wednesday 2 November: Auriol Britton – Classic 20th Century British songs


Auriol Britton graces Saint Stephen’s with her beautiful soprano tones, singing evocative renditions of classic songs from 20th century Britain. Trained at the London College of Music, Auriol has performed at a the Royal Albert Hall and regularly busks on the London Underground – having secured a much sought-after licensed pitch.

Wednesday 9 November: Sarah B – Soul, Blues and Jazz


Filling Saint Stephen’s with her powerful vocals, Sarah B, ably accompanied by Anders Olinder (keys) and Andy Tween (drums), will perform a soul, blues and jazz set (with a little reggae thrown in for good measure). Sarah has worked with Bristol reggae artists Black Roots, Talisman bands and The Jungle Red Band, and now collaborates with the experienced and talented Anders and Andy.

Friday 11 November: Remembrance Day

In this special Remembrance Day concert, we mark the commemoration with a concert of baroque and classical chamber music from the Royal Court Players. A string quartet with continuo and a wind instrument, these members of the English National Baroque Ensemble will play a concert to include C.W Gluck’s famous aria of loss, ‘What is life without thee’ and poignant trumpet works.

Wednesday 16 November: Dave Griffith and Helen James – mandolin and guitar duo


Life-affirming music from duo Dave (mandolin) and Helen (guitar) playing a set ranging from Tarantella to Tango. Selecting from a richly diverse repertoire, including Classical, Italian, Jazz, Gypsy, Brazilian Choro and Tango, the duo aim to delight and excite. Both renowned and experienced musicians the pair have played together and separately at an impressive array of concerts, festivals and venues.

Wednesday November 23: John Pearce and Mike Willox



Violinist, John Pearce, and pianist, Mike Willox, will be treating us to a classical set including compositions by Handel, Mozart and Bartok.

Both well-renowned jazz musicians, this promises to be a vibrant performance. Not yet 30, John Pearce has performed throughout Europe and Japan, on live BBC radio and television and regularly appears as a soloist, recently performing the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Stroud Symphony Orchestra. Pearce has been commended for the visceral immediacy of his playing.

With his roots in jazz, Mike has played keyboards for big names such as Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and the Communards. He has embraced new technologies and was nominated for BBC New Composer for his sound design work.
